Looking through the viewfinder with a 200mm lens attached to your camera for the first time is an exciting experience. With magnification that fills the 35mm frame with an area 1/16th of that covered by a 50mm lens, the 200mm figuratively reaches out to create eye-arresting images. With a diagonal angle of view of only 12", it is an extremely versatile lens. One of the bigger advantages is the comfortable working distance over the subject you are shooting that it provides.

Next, the maximum aperture of f/2.8 for this FD 200mm lens is reasonably good enough for low light shooting, thereby making it a good choice for stage, sports, news or available light photography. Another optical characteristic of the lens is its compressed perspective that is well pronounced, making it a strong creative tool for taking compelling images. Foreground and background appear to be drawn together. Lastly, the reason why you would select this over the standard 200mm f4.0 version is perhaps a greater scope of shallower depth-of-field control with its f/2.8 aperture. The lens shown above is the second-generation FDn version, employing Rear-group focusing which resulted in an overall compact design over its predecessor. There was another 200mm FD telephoto lens that is quite rare because it was released in1990 at the requests from the users of the New F-1 and T90 models. The lens in question was the New FD 200mm f/1.8L. Specifications-wise, it has the same construction of its AF EF counterpart like how many elements/groups, drop-in 48mm filter, built-in tripod mount and gray exterior finish. What's missing are the autofocus, Ring (USM) and electronic focus preset mechanism found on thecurrent autofocus Canon EF 200mm f/1.8L.

Depth of Field The depth-of-field of the 200mm is comparatively limited at any aperture as compared with lenses having shorter angle-of-views. For example, at f/16 and a camera-to-subject distance of 15 feet, the depth of field is about 13 to 16 feet. At maximum aperture depth of field is extremely shallow and may require precise focusing. The range of sharp focus increases, of course, as camera-to-subject distance increases and as you select smaller apertures. With the 200mm, perspective often works best when the foreground and background are as sharp as possible. You can utilize the compression effect by using small apertures whenever possible to increase depth of field. On the other hand, it is easy to render an out-of-focus background and foreground to give more emphasis on the main subject or to play down the distracting elements in the picture. The larger the aperture, the more effective it is for this technique. In fact, the New FD 200mm f/2.8 w/Rear-group focusing, is excellent when it comes to provide a reasonably blur effect in front and behind the subject in full length portraits.

When using telephoto lenses it is extremely important to keep camera and lens absolutely steady since camera movements will result in loss of sharpness in the image. As a general guideline, you should use a minimum shutter speed of 1/250 second or faster with the 200mm lens. This should provide a very stable image with the camera and lens if they are held steady if any sharp image is preferred. New FD 200mm f/4.0 LensHandling is improved with the adoption of Canon's Rear-group focusing in this telephoto lens. Only the rear lens group moves during focusing, maintaining excellent overall balance.

The telephoto ratio of this lens is 0.81 and although its length is held to 121mm, curvature of field and spherical aberrations are sufficiently reduced. Another attractive feature of this lens is that it has the closest focusing distance of 15 meters among the 200mm focal length lenses.

Generally, the price should be half that of the FD 200 f2.8 version. The weight and size of this lens is very light and compact in size. If price is your prime consideration, you can always select a faster film to compensate for the lost of a full stop over the f/2.8 version. But the f/4 design enabled this lens to have a filter size of 52mm vs. 72mm for the f/2.8 version. However, if you need more depth-of-field control, the f2.8 version could be a more ideal solution.

Technical highlight: A high speed telephoto lens boasting the world's largest maximum aperture in its class. Use of three UD glass elements suppresses the axial chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum). Internal focusing and an ultrasonic focusing motor make autofocusing almost instantaneous. The manual focusing mechanism allows the focusing speed to be switched in three steps using the Ultrasonic Motor.

Technical highlight: Light weight, fairly high speed and compact. Two UD glass elements are used to suppress axial chromatic aberration. Using a newly-designed rear focusing system. Closest focusing distance of 1.5 m/4.9 ft. High-speed autofocusing is achieved by a built-in Ultrasonic Motor and manual focusing ring is possible. The inclusion of the two UD elements gave this lens improved sharpness, contrast and color balance over the FDn version.
