Battery only charging when asleep or shutdown

My MacBook is currently only charging when asleep or shutdown. The battery itself is the original and has 1057 cycles which I know is very high, but it says its in "fair condition". My charger was bought 6 months ago. When using the MacBook the light on the charger is green, however, it states that the battery is not charging. When I put it into sleep mode or shut it down the light becomes orange and it starts to charge. I will be ordering a new battery due to the age, but could this be an issue with charger or the DC board?

I have a early 2008 13" MacBook 4.1 [ Black] . It works great, i have replaced with a new battery but this will only charge if the machine is in sleep mode or Shutdown . When it's on and plugged in, the light on the MagSafe plug is orange and the battery icon has a little lightning bolt in it. i did the SCM setting but still remain same ..

I don't think you have a problem with the systems logic but with the batteries.

Have you tried resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller [SMC].

I would start there. Let us know what you discover.

I forgot to state in the original post that I have already reset the SMC to no avail.

I would really like to know if you managed to fix your macbook. I have exactly the same problem, I bought new battery, new charger, and I changed the MagSafe DC-In Board, but nothing has changed. The battery only charges when the macBook is closed or shut down.

Furthermore the computer does not boot without battery with only the DC plug connected.

Please let me know if you managed to fix you macbook.

Finally I resolved by replacing the battery charger. Verify that your battery charger provides the proper power for your computer.

Great news! If Kevin had replied tell us that didn't help I would have recommended doing this next. You may want to clean the system contacts as often effects things.

Did you replace the MagSafe charger as well as check the socket in the system? You'll want to make sure the connector contacts are clean and the plastic is not melted.

Same problem to me. I'm wondering about my aftermarket charger.

But my macbook doesn't turn on when the battery is out. So, I'm pretty sure.

Is there any cheap solution for a new magsafe or a try to repair it?

I have the same problem. I found a MacBook thrown in streets of Stockholm. I managed to fix the black screen problem. Then i bought a cheap charger 15 kronor from a market. But unlikely the head connector was not the right type. So i cut the cable and Plugged it direkt to the battery. The battery has 8 pins i only used 2. It charges so was happy that it s charging and the battery blinks. I was so happy so i took a driller and made a hole direktly so it looks like an original cable stickning Out . The only problem is that it doesn t charge when on .

I m suspecting the charger, it takes more Than 10h very Long time to charge. One night after the charger has Been Plugged In for a long time, fully charged i Did some resets in order to bypass the login pass to install better version of iTunes , i saw that the battery indicator stayed 100 all time and the charger became a little hot like it s performing a good job. Otherwise its always frozen when charging and takes plenty of hours.

Anyone WHO could explain how to make things better or should i invest in a magsafe connector???

thank u

mounir

I replaced the battery on my MacBook 13 mid-2010 with an Anker aftermarket battery. The battery wouldnt charge and the computer did not recognize it. The magsafe light stayed green. I followed some advice from this site and put the old battery back in, made sure it was charging with the magsafe orange light on, and did a hard shutdown. Then I put the new battery back in, reset the SMC but did not boot the computer.

Supposedly this sequence of actions fools the computer into recognizing the battery, thinking its the old battery. The orange charge light was on, and I left it shut down overnight. In the morning, the green light was on, and the battery fully charged. The computer recognized the battery, and all seemed good. I disconnected the magsafe and ran the computer on the battery for a while, down to 80%, and then reconnected the magsafe. The battery wasnt charging. With the computer asleep, it still wouldnt charge.

Coconut battery app said everything was good, battery indicator on computer was normal, but wouldnt charge. That night, I did a hard shutdown, and the battery immediately started charging, orange light on. In the morning it was fully charged, green light. At this point, Im not going to complain, but it would be nice if the computer would charge without the hard shutdown.
