Which of the following positions is typically done by a full time employee at a sport facility

Am I eligible for employment and how do I apply?

Any undergraduate or graduate student is eligible for employment, permitted they meet eligibility guidelines established by UW-Whitewater Human Resources. Guidelines are available for review on the Student Employment Frequently Asked Questions site.

Application processes may vary by position, as employees may report to different program areas within the Office of Recreation Sports & Facilities. If you scroll down to our list of positions, application status updates and links may answer specific questions. We also invite you to sign in to Handshake, the campus job posting site, or speak to the staff member listed as the contact under each position in the list below. You can also speak with a current student staff member during our hours of operations.

Student employees can also work multiple positions within the department or on-campus, as long as personal schedules allow. Student employees cannot work more than 25 hours per week during the academic year.

What paperwork is needed to become an employee?

A complete list can be found on the right side of the Student Employment site.

Direct Deposit
ACA Acknowledgement Letter
I-9 Form - additional instructions for items that are needed is found on the site linked above
W-4 Form

Rec Sports also requires a code of conduct/sportsmanship agreement to be on-file for most positions.

Paperwork is to be completed and reviewed by your Rec Sports supervisor if you do not have paperwork on-file already. Once paperwork is reviewed by your supervisor, it must be submitted to Human Resources, located on the third floor in Hyer Hall.

Employees are not permitted to be scheduled for a work shift until all paperwork is turned in. A delay in paperwork may result in a position being filled by someone else. We will work with you and HR to find a resolution in the event you do not have applicable personal documents in-person.

How do I get paid?

Student employees are paid bi-weekly and via direct deposit only. Payroll documents and a schedule of payroll distribution can be found on the Student Employment site. When filling out your direct deposit information, you will need to know your financial institution's routing number.

What is Work Study?

Work Study is a form of employment that is part of the Federal financial aid program. Students who are approved for Work Study receive a specific allotment amount. In order to receive allotted money, individuals awarded Work Study must earn a paycheck. If an employee runs out of their Work Study allotment, they are placed on "Regular Pay" employment.

There is an application process involved in order to be awarded Work Study. Not all positions offered by Rec Sports are Work Study positions. Other employment positions that do not require Work Study are called "Regular Pay." Work Study paychecks follow the same distribution schedule as Regular Pay. Students are not guaranteed employment if they qualify for Work Study.

How many hours would I work each week?

This answer completely depends on the position you apply for and can be addressed during the application process. Student employees cannot work more than 25 hours a week during the academic year (international students cannot work more than 20 hours a week). It is not a guarantee that a student employee will reach the maximum number of hours in a week, however.

Student employees receive their schedules well in-advance. If someone is working too many hours, or if someone wants to work more hours (if they are eligible by rule), shift adds/drops/trades are typically allowed.

We are happy Rec Sports employment may be part of your UW-Whitewater experience, however, for student employees, academics should always remain a priority. If an employee needs time away from work to study, complete assignments, etc., that is completely understandable and we will work with you to find a solution if you are already scheduled. We do ask student employees to be responsible with their time management. We can also assist with scheduling in the event someone is ill, has a family emergency or is unable to work a scheduled shift.

When and where would I work?

Student employees play a key part in department success. Therefore, we need student employees to work during all of our hours of operations. Specific times are dependent on the position(s) the employee has.

Most of the jobs in Rec Sports require work to be performed in or around the Williams Center. Some positions also require shifts to be scheduled for University Fitness in the basement of Wells Hall and for the Roseman Gymnasium. Rec Sports also gets involved in various involvement and job fairs, so opportunities to table and host exhibits at various locations across campus may also present themselves.

To see where these locations are in relation to the UW-Whitewater campus, please view the campus map.

Are there any training or prior experience requirements to work with Rec Sports?

All positions affiliated with Rec Sports require training prior to the academic year/semester/activity season, depending on your position.

In most cases, previous experiences are not required, although some experiences and certifications are required for the following positions (see your position's staff contact for certification/experience requirements):

  • Club Sports Student Coordinator
  • Digital Content Manager
  • Group Fitness Instructor
  • Intramural Sports Student Coordinator
  • Lifeguard
  • Personal Trainer

Previous experience, although it is considered a plus, as an official (i.e. referee) or scorekeeper is not requiried for those positions.

Most Rec Sports employees must also be certified in adult First Aid, CPR and AED administration. If an employee is required to have those certifications but currently does not possess them, Rec Sports provides training courses at no cost to you!

Can I participate in programs and services offered by Rec Sports as an employee?

Absolutely! We want you to enjoy what the department has to offer and also experience the benefits of Rec Sports involvement.

That said, employees are expected to acknowledge the fact they represent Rec Sports and UW-Whitewater at all times, not just when they are on-the-clock. While participating, employees must adhere to all rules, policies and procedures and are held to higher standards. This also includes sportsmanship during competitive events in-which employees are either playing or spectating.
