Brand new Lenovo laptop won t turn on

If you turn your Lenovo laptop on and hear the computer working, but the screen is black, don't panic. There could be a way to fix the black screen without having to replace it or the computer.

Causes of a Lenovo Black Screen

There are a variety of reasons your Lenovo laptop screen won't come on. They include:

  • Hardware errors: If the hardware components or peripherals such as keyboards, mice, and cables are worn out, they could cause the screen not to display.
  • A faulty display: If there is something wrong with the display, it could cause it to stop showing the picture.
  • A faulty battery: If the battery on your laptop is very low or dead, it could create a problem with your display.
  • Software errors: Windows and other software applications can impact your screen display, as well.

Try These Lenovo Black Screen Fixes

If the screen on your Lenovo laptop isn't working, there are a few things you can try to get it going again. Try these steps, each in order, until you find the solution that works.

  1. Restart your computer. It's a wonder how much a simple restart can fix on a computer. Restart your computer without any peripherals connected. If your issue resolves, the attached peripheral was likely causing the screen not to turn on correctly.

  2. Reset the Display Mode. Press the following keyboard combination: Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Press all the keys at once and then release immediately. This refreshes your display connection and may get your display going again.

  3. Remove all the peripherals connected to your laptop. This includes any wired or wireless mice, keyboards, USB hubs, cables, etc. If the software or driver for one of those peripherals is corrupted, it could cause your display not to work correctly.

  4. Try a hard reset. In this instance, a hard reset is similar to a power cycle. Turn your Lenovo laptop off, unplug from any power, and remove the battery; disconnect any peripherals, and let everything sit for 30 seconds to a minute.

Then, press and hold the Power button for 60 seconds, put the battery back into place, and connect the power cord. Then turn your computer on to see if it powers up properly and the display comes back on.

  5. Connect to an external monitor. To test your LCD and LCD cables, connect your laptop to an external monitor with a VGA cable orconnect to a TV as an external displayusing an HDMI cable, depending on the connections available on your system. Then restart your computer.

When the computer reboot, it should display on the external monitor or TV. If not, you may need to press F4on your keyboard [or another key with a rectangle box with vertical lines on the left and rightmeant to indicate a monitor].

If the computer displays on the external monitor, the LCD or internal LCD cable could be faulty.Replace the LCD cable. If that doesn't work, the LCD screen needs to be replaced and should probably go to the repair shop since replacing the monitor can be delicate. Do follow the steps below before taking on this repair to be sure it's not anything else.

  6. Update your graphics drivers. If your graphics driver is corrupted or out of date, it could cause the display not to work correctly. Try updating the driver and then restarting the computer to see if your display turns on.

  7. Update Windows. One more thing to try might be to update Windows. Windows updates can control a lot of the systems on your computer. So, if you get behind on them, you may begin to experience issues with your machine. Update your version of Windows to see if your display then turns on.

  8. Restart the exporer.exe process. Explorer.exe manages several essential processes on your computer, including your desktop, toolbar, and many other things. If something happened and that process was accidentally closed, it could cause your screen to go black. Try restarting it to see if it fixes the problem:

    1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Escape to open the Task Manager.
    2. Tap Details.
    3. Locate and select explorer.exe and then click End Task.
    4. Restart your computer to see if that fixed the display issue.
  9. Factory reset your computer. This fix is a nuclear option because when you reset your computer, you'll be set back to how it was straight out of the box, and you'll lose all your data, so try everything else first. If you have to use this option, try to get a backup of your data before starting the reset.

Know When to Call a Professional

If you've tried everything above and the screen on your Lenovo laptop still isn't working, there is likely a problem with the internal cables connecting the screen to the computer board or the display. Unless you're well versed in repairing computers, then it might be time to call a professional. Just remember, if your computer is still under warranty, reach out to Lenovo first.
