L oreal Glycolic Acid Serum Review

Every so often, a product comes onto the market and it becomes an instant classic. Remember when Glossier Balm Dotcom ($12) came out? I certainly do, because it was so dang hard to get my hands on one. But the latest launch to immediately elevate itself to cult-fave beauty product status is not only really good, but it's also available at the drugstore. L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum ($23), which launched in October, 2019, has already skyrocketed to selling a bottle every minute in the United States.

The formulation was developed by dermatologists, and the 10-percent pure glycolic acid is enough to resurface skin the same way a chemical peel would... for a whole lot less than what it would cost you for a peel at a derm's office. The OG chemical exfoliant is lauded for its ability to improve skin's tone and texture, getting rid of discoloration as well as fine lines. Historically, though, getting your hands (and face) on a glycolic product that actually works would cost you a pretty penny, but considering the affordable price tag on this particular serum, it's no wonder that the masses have fallen in love with it at first sight. Board-certified dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali, MD is also a fan, noting that in addition to having a powerful amount of glycolic, the serum also has hydrating components like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to balance things out.

Since glycolic acid helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin (the way all exfoliants, chemical and physical, are known to do), this highly-concentrated solution of the stuff clears the way for your other products to penetrate more deeply. This means that for the cost of one $23 bottle, you'll also be getting more bang for your buck on your pricier products, too. But one thing worth keeping in mind? "It's strong, so if you have sensitive skin or a darker skin tone, I'd proceed with a bit more caution," says Dr. Bhanusali, who warns that he's seen chemical burns in certain skin types using solutions that are 10 percent and higher concentrations. To be safe, he suggests spot treating a small area before slathering it all over your face.

The new glycolic serum is in good company alongside other derm-approved products by L'Oréal Paris, including L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives Hyaluronic Acid Serum ($20), which was also selling a bottle a minute at this time last year. Pro tip: Using the two fan-fave serums together in the same routine is a great way to keep your skin happy and hydrated—and for these prices, your wallet will be happy, too.

Glycolic Acid Serum Review

Following a skin care routine is key to keeping your skin looking its best. And choosing the right skin care ingredients also plays an important role. One of the most popular ingredients for anti-aging, fighting acne, and other skin concerns is glycolic acid. Known for its exfoliating and skin-brightening benefits, glycolic acid is a dermatologist favorite and can work wonders on the skin when used consistently. One way to get a daily dose of this acid is through a facial serum, like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum. Read on to find out more about this serum, complete with benefits and a guide on how to use it to keep your skin healthy and youthful-looking.

How To Determine If Your Skin Needs Glycolic Acid

Before adding any new products to your skin care routine, be sure to figure out your skin’s needs. Consult with your dermatologist before introducing any new products into your regimen. If you haven’t used a glycolic acid serum before, keep reading to learn more about the benefits and how you can incorporate it into your own skin care routine

The Benefits Of The L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum

As we get older, our skin loses its ability to shed dead skin cells from its surface, leading to build-up and dull-looking skin. Glycolic acid works to exfoliate the outermost layers of the skin, polishing away those dead cells. Formulated with 10 percent pure glycolic acid and aloe, this serum works to even the skin tone, reduce dark spots, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The formula is free of parabens, dyes, fragrances, and mineral oil, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. And the 10 percent concentration is the highest percentage that’s safe for use without a prescription, according to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Thanks to its dose of aloe, your skin will be left feeling nourished and smooth. It also absorbs quickly, doesn’t feel greasy, and won’t clog pores. With continued use, you’ll begin to notice a softer, visibly younger, more radiant-looking complexion

How To Use The 10% Pure Glycolic Acid Serum

Prepared to make room in your routine for this derm-validated skin care essential? Here’s how to add our serum to your nighttime skin care routine.

Step #1: Cleanse

Serums are typically intended to be applied to clean, dry skin—which means you’ll want to wash your face before reaching for this serum. Try the L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Bright Reveal Brightening Daily Scrub Cleanser. It’s formulated to exfoliate the skin without over-drying it. Use once or twice a week at night to replace your daily facial cleanser.

Step #2: Apply The Serum

This serum is recommended to be used in the evenings because products formulated with glycolic acid can cause photosensitivity. Pump four to six drops of the serum directly onto your fingertips and gently pat it over your entire face. For sensitive skin, start by using the serum two times per week and build to nightly use.

Step #3: Follow Up With Moisturizer

To complete your nighttime skin care routine, finish off by applying a moisturizer like the L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Anti-Aging Overnight Mask. This rich, hydrating leave-on creamy face mask works to form a protective shield over the skin. It’s formulated with good-for-you skin care ingredients like pro-retinol, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid, which can help reduce signs of aging and brighten your complexion. Massage a generous amount into your face, neck, and jawline, and then head off to bed.

Editor’s Tip: Remember we mentioned increased photosensitivity?  Well, it’s important to use skin care with sun protection the following morning. Reach for a double-duty moisturizer like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Day Lotion SPF 30. It’s formulated with vitamin C, pro-retinol, hyaluronic acid, and SPF 30 to help soften and soothe the skin while offering a layer of sun protection.

How do you use Loreal glycolic acid serum?

Apply 4-5 drops to clean, dry skin every evening before Revitalift moisturizer. Follow with SPF in the morning to protect skin. For sensitive skin, start by using 2-3 times per week and build to nightly use. Avoid direct contact with eyes, lips and nostrils.

Is glycolic acid serum good for your face?

"It has skin exfoliating benefits to help shed dead cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin," says Dr. Zeichner. "It helps brighten a dull complexion, enhance radiance, and improve skin tone. Glycolic acid also helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."

How long does it take glycolic acid serum to work?

After about a month, you'll notice that you have fewer blemishes, as the Glycolic Acid works to keep your pores clean. Two months in, you'll notice your skin tone has become more even and is less prone to discolouration.

When should I use glycolic acid serum?

Glycolic acid should always be applied in the evening, as it makes your skin sensitive to sunlight. Applying it at night gives ample time for it to do its magic without a higher risk or damaging your skin in the sun. But you should still always apply an SPF moisturizer in the morning.
