Rinse the leaves and the fragrance surrounds your heart like good news. Perhaps this is what a fox feels when she smells the forest floor?

The mouth feel of the liquor is exquisite and the first sip tastes fresh and yet ancient. The profile is broad but subtle. Like dapples of sunlight piercing the shade of a wise old tree.

The color is a deep, satisfying russet like happy memories of autumn and the leaves are deep mahogany and green, pert, pretty, and inviting at the bottom of the gaiwan.

This profound expression of the art form of Pu-erh reminds us that although our world can be rude and beset with senseless obstacles, tea is perfect and eternal, and can push aside the veil that obscures the beautiful choreography which is the universe as it truly is.

If I had a tremendous amount of money, I would have Charlie Watt’s tailor make my clothes, and I would buy some cakes of Big Green Tree.

Pu Erh tea can be purchased as either raw/green (sheng) or ripened/cooked (shu), depending on processing method or ageing. Sheng pu erh can be roughly classified on the tea oxidation scale as a green tea, and the shou or aged-green variants as post-fermented tea.

Unlike other teas that should ideally be consumed shortly after production, pu erh can be drunk immediately or aged for many years; pu erh teas are often now classified by year and region of production much like wine vintages.

Modern medical science has recently shown that the health benefits of Pu Erh tea may be more than just Chinese folklore.

The aroma is rich and deep and the brewed tea has a soft, smooth sweetness with notes of dried fruit. It is a comforting and warming tea.

Authentic, Old-Growth Pu-Erh Tea

This Pu-Erh tea is grown and processed in the famous Lincang region of Yunnan Province, from the well-known Mengku tea variety, and produced in Feng Qing, Yunnan. The tea trees grow semi-wild. Our Pu-Erh tea meets EU standards for pesticides; it is clean and healthy.

Shou (Cooked, Ripe) Pu-Erh

Shou Pu-Erh is a newer form of Pu-Erh invented in the late 1970s. To make Shou Pu-Erh, the finished maocha is kept damp in large, covered piles for 3-5 months to promote a quicker post-fermentation, a process called wo dui. The timing of the wet-piling process must be closely controlled by the tea master, and stopped at the right moment for the best tea aroma and flavor. The water used for wo dui must be pure; our ripe Pu-Erh is made with fresh, clean, local spring water for the best results.

History of Pu-Erh Tea

Many believe that Pu-Erh was the first tea used as a beverage. Pu-Erh tea has been drunk for at least 1,000 years, since the Tang dynasty, and became widely popular 400 years ago in the Qing dynasty. Pu-Erh is said to offer health benefits to the digestive and circulatory systems. (Please note, we are tea people, not doctors! Please consult a health professional for any serious conditions.)

This is purely Lao Man'e village ripe pu-erh tea harvested from mature trees in Spring 2022 and then wet piled in Autumn 2022.

This is the most potent ripe tea we have ever pressed. It's quite bitter, but is incredibly complex tasting with a long lasting mouthfeel and strong cha qi as well!

Entirely Lao Man'e old plantation material from Lao Man'e village in the Bu Lang mountains. Lao Man'e is a village in the Bu Lang Mountain range, not far from Lao Ban Zhang and also quite near Jie Liang village. Lao Man'e tea is something in between the extreme bitterness of Jie Liang tea and the bitterness with fast and sweet huigan of Lao Ban Zhang tea.

This tea has a bold, complex flavor (I almost want to describe it as having a 'metallic tang' but that sounds bad and I don't mean that in a bad way). It smooths out after a few brews into a less complex, more soothing flavor. I like that the flavor changes so much over the brews, it adds variety. I can tell that I need to drink this tea more to fully appreciate it. Our responseThank you for your nice review and high mark.

Love this tea 07/04/2023 By snap shiver Bana has definitely spoiled me. I never knew Tea could taste so good. All the different types of tea I've bought from Bana have been Superb and this is another good one. Someone mention a fishy oder. The way to get rid of it is to dump the first brew out and rinse the leaves afterwards. The smell comes from the fermenting process not fish. Our responseThank you so much for your kind words and quality endorsement - it means a lot to us.

Interesting as I went on 03/12/2019 By Sabotis First few recommended infusions 1-3 had a "seafood market" smell not that off putting but it was there. As the infusions went on 4 or more there was less of that market Nose. Taste was surprisingly clean Rich and earthy with a slight medicinal finish. Cake Label was embedded in the cake posed some challenges. Our responseCake label is called the "inner ticket." It is to be embedded in the cake as a way to authenticate the tea cake. Glad you enjoyed the taste of this tea.

Novice 08/22/2020 By Mary I am a novice and this is my first pu-era tea! I almost expected it to be unpleasant because of what someone had told me about their experience. Our responsePu-erh comes in a range of qualities. We are so glad you were pleasantly surprised with the quality of our tea.

excellent tea 04/17/2019 By seth berg I am saving my 5 star review for a tea I haven't yet discovered that is the best ever; so this tea gets 4 stars. This tea has no flaws, it's extremely smooth and has a nice deep rich taste. None of the flavors are especially interesting, but it is well balanced with no off tastes. Worth the price. Our responseHi Seth, this is as good a review as I can get from you because you are such a discerning pu-erh drinker. I believe this tea will grow more interesting as the years pass. Thank for your review.

Good Tea 07/01/2023 By snap shiver Unfortunately or maybe fortunately, Bana has spoiled me. I can never go back to drinking the tea I used to drink. My experience with this tea has taught me what really good tea is supposed to taste like. Our responseYou nailed it. The tea journey is a one-way street. Once you know what is good, it is hard to go back to the not-so-good. :)

Lovely and Long Lasting 01/06/2020 By Jennifer D This tea, which I purchased a year ago, is quite lovely, and once I got proportions right for my small yixing teapot, it continued to be lovely through the 8th steeping. Thank you!
