I picked some bits up Muji’s new skincare line a while ago and I’ve been putting it through its paces, and I’ve finally come to some conclusions. My favourite item of the lot is definitely the essence, I’d never tried one before and I have to say its a step I’ve enjoyed adding into my routine.

Essences are a new import, inspired by korean beauty routines, and different brands seem to have different ideas about what essences should do and where they should fit into routines. They vary from being toner like, to serums to lotions, this is called an all in one essence, the idea being that if you’re in a rush this can act as an all in one from toner to serum to moisturiser. I can see how that would work, it’s refreshing and hydrating, but I’ve been using it more as a serum in my routine. It adds an extra boost of hydration under my moisturiser and it reminds me of a budget dupe of hydralouron, apart from its unusual texture.

The texture of this is somewhat strange, though not unpleasant, and it took me a while to get used to. It has a gel like consistency and its very wet, but it feels like its full of alcohol, despite being alcohol free. It sort of melts in contact with skin, and when you massage it into skin it feels very thin and wet and sort of evaporates. After this it leaves a slightly sticky film on the skin, which might sound very unpleasant but really doesn’t bother me. This is completely scentless, which I always prefer from my skincare. This is super lightweight which I’m loving for summer and the current heat, it gives all the hydration you need which feeling heavy or at all thick.

The new Muji skincare line is alcohol, paraben, mineral oil and fragrance free which is great news as its one of the few affordable skincare ranges to be free form those nasties. At £7.95 this essence is definitely affordable, and for me it makes a much cheaper alternative to a serum, where you could easily be paying £30 for a ‘cheap’ one. If you’re on a budget but still care about the ingredients in your skincare I would definitely check Muji out. Its still exclusive to Selfridges, but in about a month or so (I think) it will become available in more Muji stores, but a the moment its a great excuse to head to Selfridges. Have you tired this essence? What did you think? Any good essence recommendations out there?
